Volunteers from Biffa, the UK leader in sustainable waste management, and Mitchells & Butlers, one of the UK’s largest operators of pubs, bars and restaurants, rolled up their sleeves to remove 60kg of litter from a Bournemouth beach.

Along with dozens of bottles and cans, the team also removed discarded clothes, including flip-flops and socks, and hazardous marine waste such as fishing wire, from the sand and shoreline at Southbourne.

The event was organised by workers from Biffa’s Poole depot and members of Mitchells & Butlers kitchen development team.

Recyclable waste, including plastic and glass bottles, was put back into the circular economy to be transformed into new products, while non-recyclable general waste was sent to an energy-from-waste facility to be converted into electricity.

The collaboration also reinforced Mitchells & Butlers ongoing sustainability efforts. Since October 2023, Biffa has helped them divert 10,500 tonnes of food waste from landfill to energy recovery.

We take great pride in supporting local sustainability projects and were thrilled to work alongside our customer Mitchells & Butlers for the litter pick at Southbourne beach, helping to ensure our beautiful coastline is protected for everyone’s enjoyment.
