Enabling the Circular Economy
What we're doing to close the loop.
What is the circular economy?
A circular economy is part of sustainable waste management and is where waste is repurposed for another use or transformed back into a raw material. A good example is milk bottles, which are recycled to create raw materials that are then used to make more milk bottles.
How Biffa is making it happen
We’re helping customers to be more sustainable and participate in the circular economy by:
How does the circular economy benefit my business?
Sustainable waste management and closed loop solutions can help you reduce your impact on the environment and divert as much waste away from landfill as possible. This can also reduce your costs and create additional value for your organisation.
The Deposit Return Scheme
The Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) will enable more circular practices, encouraging consumers to return their empty drinks cans and bottles for recycling. In the scheme consumers buying drinks will pay a 20p deposit which gets refunded when they take their empty bottle or can back. In most cases this will be via reverse vending machines at retail outlets.
Circular innovation
Biffa partners with organisations and individuals to innovate and enable more businesses to participate in the circular economy. At one end of the scale we are supporting local entrepreneurs with material to create their products. At the other end, we are in manufacturing plants, identifying new opportunities to remove surplus from the production line and redistribute.
