Battery compliance
Battery compliance services for producers, importers and distributors of batteries or battery products.
What is battery compliance?
In 2009, the Battery and Accumulator Regulations were first introduced. These require all battery producers and distributors to increase the volume of batteries and battery products that are recycled. It is their responsibility to ensure batteries are collected, treated, and recycled. This is similar to the WEEE and Packaging regulations currently in place in the UK.
Reporting the volume of batteries in the UK market
Under the regulations producers and distributors have an obligation to report on the amount of portable, automotive, and industrial batteries they have placed in the UK market. If you make or import batteries or products that contain batteries (such as phone or laptops) in to the UK, then you may also be required to report on volumes.
Registering for a Battery Compliance Scheme
Small producers of portable batteries (1 tonne and over) need to join a Battery Compliance Scheme. Producers of industrial and automotive batteries must register directly with the Environment Agency. Retailers also need to offer a takeback service if they sell more than 32kgs of portable batteries per year per store.
Why choose Biffa for Battery Compliance?
Donate surplus to Company Shop
Members of the Biffa Battery Compliance Scheme can also donate or sell surplus stock to our surplus redistribution subsidiary, Company Shop. This helps to further reduce waste and deliver a return on goods that would normally be thrown away.
