Biffa, the UK’s leading sustainable waste management company, is delighted to be joining forces with The British Basketball League to champion greener, cleaner communities, helping them to reduce waste and protect the environment.

Welcoming Biffa as the Official Sustainability Partner of the League over the next three years, the partnership will see clubs and venues across the Men’s and Women’s Leagues receive support from Biffa in developing their own sustainability strategies.

This will include clubs, venues and Biffa working together to reduce waste and promote effective reuse and recycling in their communities.

This collaboration is set to be a game-changer for both basketball in the UK and the waste management industry. By investing in the growth of the sport, Biffa aims to help British basketball reach new heights and increase the sustainability of the sport, from grassroots to professional levels, while nurturing young talent and igniting a passion for the game.

The League, its clubs and Biffa will spearhead new community initiatives to inspire other businesses and the next generation to join the movement and learn how to be more sustainable and reduce waste. Biffa experts will be on hand throughout the partnership to provide support and guidance to the League, clubs and partners.

The League itself has already taken significant steps this season to promote sustainability and champion the environment, including centralising its broadcast operations and producing content in-house to save on unnecessary travel.

Tackling climate change is a challenge for everyone and basketball’s status as the second-most popular sport in the UK by participation, played by 1.18 million children and young people every week, coupled with the League’s footprint across the country, offers an excellent opportunity to engage and educate a large, diverse audience about the importance of sustainability.

British Basketball League Chief Executive Officer, Aaron Radin, said: “We’re delighted to announce this milestone partnership between the British Basketball League and Biffa as we work towards our shared vision for a more sustainable future.

“This partnership signifies more than just a collaboration; it's a testament to our collective commitment to making a positive impact on the environment. I’m excited for our franchises and stakeholders to work together with the League and Biffa to deliver our ambitions.

“Together, we'll leverage our strengths to drive meaningful change, empowering communities and leaving a lasting legacy of environmental stewardship and social responsibility."

Maxine Mayhew, Chief Operating Officer – Collections & Specialist Services at Biffa, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to announce this partnership with the British Basketball League which is a huge platform to help change the way people think about waste.

“Tackling climate change is for everyone, and, by working with the League and clubs, we can educate and inspire young people through a sport they love to play their part in protecting the environment.

“We have many exciting plans to support the clubs and venues as well as the wider community, to help them be cleaner, greener and leaner when it comes to waste. We look forward to working with the British Basketball League, the clubs and their communities over the coming years in what is a game-changing partnership."
