Biffa Recycling facilities

Material Recycling Facilities (MRFs)

Biffa’s two Material Recycling Facilities (MRFs) process around 470,000 tonnes of dry mixed recyclable waste every year.

Material Recycling Facilities (MRFs) are essential in providing quality raw materials to the production industry as they are designed to separate co-mingled recyclables into their individual material streams and prepare them for sale in the commodity markets. We have invested around £35 million in our MRFs to improve segregation, processing and decontamination of single stream and mixed recyclable materials including:

  • Paper and cardboard recycling
  • Plastic bottles and containers
  • Aluminium and steel cans

Waste collected from our dry mixed recycling service is transported to one of our Material Recycling Facilities (MRFs) in Aldridge or Edmonton. There they are separated by material, used beverage cans and other aluminium cans are sent to our Derby Polishing Plant while other dry materials such as paper, plastic and glass are processed at our MRFs.

Biffa trades 570k tonnes of commodities every year, of which 440k tonnes are exported to international markets, including China where materials are made into new products and packaging. Such large volume enables us to deliver the best return and makes us one of the UK’s leading recycling companies.

About our Material Recycling Facilities (MRFs)

  • Aldridge Material Recycling Facilities

Built in 2008, our Aldridge MRF diverts 150,000 tonnes of waste a year from landfill by turning it into saleable commodities. Use of the latest technology and processing equipment means Aldridge can accept combined and segregated recyclables sourced from local authorities and commercial customers.

They can then process them to high-quality standards. At Aldridge, we process paper and cardboard recycling as well as aluminium, glass, plastics and steel.

  • Edmonton Material Recycling Facilities

Our recycling facility at Edmonton is one of the UK’s largest materials recycling facilities (MRF). It has the capacity to recycle 250,000 tonnes of waste per year. The site has been fitted out with the most modern technology for the high-quality processing of recyclable materials.

Designed to process both domestic and commercial dry recyclables, materials recycled include paper, cardboard, plastic, metal and glass containers and other materials.

  • Derby Polishing Plant

In addition to the above MRFs, our polishing plant in Derby focuses on recycling used beverage cans (UBCs) and polishing the aluminium cans to add value to them prior to onward processing. With the capacity to process around 10,000 tonnes of waste a year, this plant acts as both a transfer station and a clean-up facility.
